Cities of TOMORROW in Nantes: discovering innovative methods for citizens' engagement

Picture of Nantes

Last week, TOMORROW's pilot cities went to Nantes to

  • Learn theories and practices of transition governance, transition thinking and roadmap development;
  • Improve their skills for the design of a transition roadmap, process facilitation, monitoring and evaluation, etc;
  • Learn from each other and improve collaboration in the group;
  • Support each other and get ready for the next phase: the development of their "Transition Roadmapping Action Plan".

Why Nantes?

Nantes became famous for their innovative processes for citizen participation. They were awarded "European Capital of Innovation" for the "Grand Debat" (Big Debate) in 2019 . The metropolis of Nantes turned the energy transition into an opportunity to work on the future of its territory by opening the energy debate and enabling the collaboration between citizens, municipalities, companies, NGOs and other stakeholders. Learn more

Many different sessions to make the most out of the visit

Representatives of Nantes Metropole presented their process and discussed the operational challenges they encountered on the way, but also the success factors.

The study tour was also an occasion to reflect around the piliot cities motivations, hopes and fear. It was structured around different interactive sessions to present or deepen certain topics such as how to build a transition team or innovative roadmaps/energy practices. Each pilot city presented the progress of their work on system and actor analysis.
